Understanding Anxiety Attacks In Children

Because of how common they are, you may have experienced an anxiety attack at some point in your life already. Something that many adults do not understand is that children can suffer from such an attack as well. This is something that can be frightening for both you and your child. Here is some useful information to help you understand anxiety attacks in children.

It is important you understand the basic facts so you can learn how to deal with a serious matter like a panic attack. What you need to know is that children experience these emotions and feelings for a much different reason than adults. Many children will begin to fear they will have an attack when going to different places. The thought of something occurring while in public is embarrassing and nerve-racking.

There are several different kinds of anxiety attacks in children you need to familiarize yourself with. The most basic kind is a generalized anxiety disorder. This is typically recognized by excessive worrying about various things from the past, present or what is to come in the future. Some of the common things to worry about is an upcoming event, school, friends or past events. A common reaction is that children cannot control their worries.

In order to help your child fight through this, take them through various relaxation techniques and therapy. Try to calm them down and talk their worries right out of them. If you are having difficulties doing this, there are trained mental health physicians out there that can help with the situation. These professionals can teach your child how to use positive self-talk as oppose to downgrading words.

Another common kind of anxiety attacks in children is known as separation anxiety disorder. When separated from loved ones or parents, children often become worried. Any time they are put in a situation or surrounding they are not comfortable with, anxiety can be the result. It can come about when parents are out for the evening or if the child is left for several days while the parents are on vacation.

To help correct this, talk to your children and let them know that nothing bad is going to happen. Help them understand that you will be returning and that you love them very much. As hard as it may be, sometimes the best solution is to go out once a week so they learn to deal with separation. Anxiety attacks in children are far more common than you would expect, but these are some things you can do to help your children cope with their problems.
